Rob Woffinden, one of Scunthorpe Speedway’s all-time great riders, passed away this morning after a year-long battle with cancer. The 47-year old, who was born and lived locally, was one of the sport’s most likeable characters during his seventeen-year racing career and that popularity continued when, after emigrating to Australia in the mid-nineties, he returned to Britain with son Tai in 2006.
Upon hearing the news his close friend and Scunthorpe promoter, Rob Godfrey, said the world had lost an outstanding person. “It’s such a sad loss. Rob was such a good guy. You couldn’t fail to like him and he will be sadly missed by so many. The Woffinden family have been an important part of Scunthorpe Speedway since the seventies when Rob used to go help prepare the track at Quibell Park. All of us are thinking of Sue, Tai, Cynthia and the rest of the family at this terribly sad time”.
