21.07.09: Speedway salutes ‘Third-bend’ Smithy
The speedway world came out in force to celebrate the life of Scunthorpe Speedway Co-promoter and Team Manager Kenny Smith earlier today. Several hundred people, including so many representing all areas of the sport, assembled at the Eddie Wright Raceway in Scunthorpe to pay their respects to ‘Third-bend’ Smithy or ‘King’ Kenny, as he was so affectionately known amongst Scunthorpe speedway fans. Riders, mechanics, promoters, officials and fans assembled on the centre-green to listen to a service conducted by Reverend Lyn Gregg. It included a heart-felt eulogy by Kenny’s close friend and Redcar promoter Brian Havelock and after entering to Meatloaf’s Two Out Of Three Ain’t Bad, Kenny took to the track for one last time after the service to the sounds of Catch Us If You Can by the Dave Clark Five, the tune that has been synonymous with the Scorpions since they were formed in 2005. After being thrashed by forty-two points at Rye House in the Premier Trophy the Henderson Insurance Scorpions returned in for the league match last night and put up a much improved performance, going down by just fourteen points (53-39); a deficit that would have been significantly less if a hotly-disputed refereeing decision had gone their way. Leading the way in exceptional style was stand-in skipper David Howe who scored sixteen points and was only beaten by one Rocketsď¿½â‚¬â„¢ rider in five races. Scorpions Reports icon

It proved the right decision and with Thursday’s rain-off after nine heats at Redcar the Scorpions will be hoping it is third time lucky tonight night when they travel down to face the Rye House Rockets. The team will have a new rider in their midst tomorrow night when former Somerset, Workington and Sheffield rider, Ritchie Hawkins, returns from injury to replace Adam Allott in the line-up.
